I’m not a dancer, but I do love dances. People watching is my favorite and I marvel at
how they make their bodies move in ways I have yet to figure out and, it might be too
late. I found myself fighting tears as I sat in my chair at the Glow Party last night. There
is something sacred about camp, I believe.
It’s a place where kids who are frequently
told or made to believe “you are wrong.” Or “You are not enough” or “You are too hard”
or ”Be more normal, more like us” get to shake the etch-a-sketch and be with people
who say “Wow, you are amazing. How can we be more like you?”
It is the place where awkward boys who are typically ignored are seen and appreciated
for their hilarious dry wit.
Where kids who have had to make too many decisions can lay down the burden of
being in charge, as scary as that might be.
Where the ALL IN, extroverted boy finds the shy, anxious cabinmate and they giggle
until late into the night.
Where girls whose crushes never give them the time of day get to play volleyball with
cute and incredibly kind counselors nicknamed “Prince Charming.”
Where kids who have never been away from their parents figure out that their friends
and counselors are there, and it’s okay to sleep.
Where serious and suspicious girls get to subtlety dance and laugh. And maybe even
practice riding a bike. Where experienced campers get to grin from ear to ear.
Where Epilepsy is not an identity, but simply a shared experience.
Where the Biggest carry the Smallest but most importantly, where the Smallest carry the
Biggest.
Actually, these kids carry all of us. They just keep saving us. How lucky are we?
One of our very wise counselors, Viola, was heard saying “I didn’t think I was a party
person. Turns out I just hadn’t found the right people to party with. I’ve found my group.”
May I be so.
