"Winning Kids"
Chosen to Represent all
Idaho Children With Epilepsy
Krishelle
Amlin
"Winning Kid" for 2000-2001

Every
spring the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho sets out to find just the "right"
Idaho child to represent all Idaho children with epilepsy. This year the
EFI client services committee has chosen Krishelle Amlin, a Boise third
grader. Krishelle, who was nominated by her mother, Suzanne, has generalized
epilepsy. According to Mom, Krishelle, who was diagnosed in April of 1999,
was at first very confused and scared. She even went through a period
of denial.
When the Kids on the Block puppets visited
Krishelle's classroom and Brian
was able to help all the children learn about epilepsy and having seizures,
she accepted the fact that she had epilepsy. She also learned that taking
her medication would help control her seizures.
Now a year later, this active Boise third
grader is doing exceptionally well
in and out of school. She shines in reading, does well in spelling, and
in all her schoolwork. Not only is Krishelle doing well in her classroom,
she is busy playing Y basketball. This summer saw Krishelle in and out
of the water, not only at the Y pool but also at the pool at her apartment
complex. She has overcome her fear of the water and swims like a fish.
As a matter of fact, Mom says, "She could be Idaho's "Winning
Fish!"
As Idaho's "Winning Kid", Krishelle
will be representing all Idaho children with epilepsy. After a classroom
visit from EFI in late September, Krishelle will have an opportunity to
meet Governor Dirk Kempthorne in November. Together they will officially
recognize November as Epilepsy Month. In February, Suzanne Amlin will
tell Krishelle's story at the annual St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Then
in spring 2001, Suzanne, Krishelle and EFI will nominate Krishelle for
the national "Winning Kid". As Mom explains, "Krishelle
is an inspiration to all of those around her. She is proof that you can
do anything that you set your mind to regardless of your condition!"
With that attitude, it is no wonder
that Krishelle Amlin is a "WINNING KID".
