Mark Music Memorial Scholarship
Saige Harrington Takes the 2006 - 2007
Mark Music Scholarship to BSU
It is the attitude! It is that special perspective on life that allows someone to succeed even when faced with health and physical challenges. Saige Harrington from Idaho City has that attitude. She has that combination of fortitude, strength, and self-assurance to meet head on the challenges not only of the epilepsy she has had since she was twelve but also the juvenile type I diabetes. In her own words she says of her epilepsy and diabetes, “I make a point to put my life and interests before my obstacles. Epilepsy is a challenge that I have to overcome in order for me to do the things that I want to do.” She adds to that, “Even though I am inflicted with this ailment, as well as juvenile diabetes, I refuse to let them hold me back. I have no choice but to deal with it, my happiness depends on it.”
It is this young woman’s attitude that persuaded the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho scholarship committee members to choose Saige Harrington as recipient of the Mark Music scholarship. In their recommendations, Saige’s teachers at Idaho City High School recognized a high motivation to succeed, strong leadership skills, and outstanding academic accomplishment. She always challenged herself to take the most rigorous courses including a biotechnology class. She was a leader in student government holding various elected positions. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in sports including cross country track. She volunteered for many community service projects.
Saige also served as a senate page for the 58th Idaho legislature, 2006 session. Her work there was highly regarded. She was recognized for her intelligence, consideration of others, and her professional manner in general.
Saige currently attends Boise State University where she is majoring in biology. She eventually wants a career in bioethics which she describes as her passion. There is no doubt that Saige will reach whatever goal she sets for herself. Nothing, including her epilepsy will hold her back. Her attitude is her assurance.
