What a success it has been
for our Winning Kid two years
running… Jane Janzer!
The journey began in June,
2000 when Jane was just five
years old. She had her first
seizure at the balloon launch
at the Boise River
Festival. Jane was
diagnosed with epilepsy and her family set out to discover all
treatment options.
After many doctor visits in and out of town and many
medication trials, the Janzers were beginning to wonder if
surgery was an option. In the fall of 2005, Jane was the first
patient at the new St. Luke’s Comprehensive Epilepsy
Center under the direction of Dr. Robert Wechsler. Jane’s
life would soon change dramatically.
Dr. Wechsler, a Stanford trained epileptologist, referred
Jane to Stanford Medical Center for surgical evaluation. In
May of 2006, Jane had a very successful epilepsy surgery
and has been seizure free since then. Jane is one of the
lucky kids who could be helped by surgery. Even though
the whole process was very involved and it wasn’t always
easy, the Janzers believe they are very fortunate for the
opportunity. Jane is a different child than she was before
the surgery.
Jane is enjoying her life seizure free. She is much more
relaxed, doesn’t worry as much, and is experiencing life in a
new way. She still has her love for animals and was able to
get her own cat and care for it. She enjoys drawing, writing,
and reading and even has a best friend she can share it with.
We are all very proud of Jane and all that she has accomplished
this past year.
Thank you, Jane, for being a role model to all those who live
with epilepsy. You inspire us to live our lives to the fullest. By
sharing your story and bringing awareness to epilepsy, you give
hope to many Idaho children who are living with epilepsy.
